30 Days of Buffy - Day Seven

the moment before
I hate discussing my least favorite anything, much less least favorite character. It's too much like bashing, and I try very hard not to do that. But it's the meme, so here we are.

So, unsurprisingly, it's Xander.

For his proprietary and intrusive attitude with Buffy. For his judgmental and entitled opinion spewing on the decisions she made about her personal life .For his unbending and unrelenting snark about the guys she chose to spend time with, for his naked jealousy that made him such a bad friend. For the way he rallied the Scoobies to brow-beat her for things he didn’t bother to understand (Innocence, Dead Man’s Party, Revelations), for doing all that in front of an audience of her peers so she would be “properly” cowed and shamed.

All that because she didn’t pick him.

For only wanting Willow when she fell for someone else. For cheating on Cordelia and causing an accident that could have killed her. For refusing to feel bad about cheating on her and causing that accident because she wouldn’t make things easy on him by forgiving him. For reverting back to jerk-mode once they were broken up and refusing to understand why she might not want to hold hands anymore. For still thinking of her as “his” Cordy as late as the end of their senior year.

For blackmailing Amy into causing a spell which would make Cordelia fall horribly in love with him so he could turn around and dump her to assuage his own fucking ego.

For daring to judge and argue with Buffy for going after Anya after the shit storm of guilt he leveled at her for not being able to kill Angelus.

For hating Angel for “getting there first.”

Xander has some good points. He’s saved Buffy’s life and he’ll always have her back. But his flaws are too glaring and, for me, they eclipse his good traits.

I tend to agree. I could never truly warm to Xander. Of course I liked him when he was with Cordy because he was bearable there, but certainly afterwards I disliked him so much.

For refusing to feel bad about cheating on her and causing that accident because she wouldn’t make things easy on him by forgiving him.

This especially made me dislike him!

Hey sweetie. Just popping in to say that I think this was very well-written. You just gave your reasons for why Xander is your least favorite and I don't read it as bashing because he did do all those things.

he is like actually the platonic ideal of the Nice Guy. it's amazing.

I hated Xander for all of these reasons...then he broke Anya's heart in Hell's Bell's and I was actively wishing that she'd get to vengeance on him.

Douche is the absolute word of the day, for me, where Xander is concerned. *nods*

These reasons are more than enough to hate him. Guy always bugged me, way back from the Pilot, maybe because I know people like him IRL and just wanna punch them. I don't care how many times he might have saved the world, I'd take somebody who is a "bad" guy and knows it over Xander's petty ass any day.

Why yes, this haterade is delicious, thank you.

And the worst bit was he never had to suffer through a single consequence of his actions..

He remains the only Scooby to be never confronted with his inner darkness, and to never have to stand up and defend his actions..because he is human, and a man, and therefore, inherently better..

I think the worst part is how he's been made to appear right - in Into The Woods, he dresses Buffy down and blames her for Riley leaving, and the way it's played with her 'revelation' face is that he's right, she's to blame. RAGE.

I think he's never made to confront his own shortcomings because he's 'coded' as being right - the Guy Who Sees. And because he's Joss' avatar in the early seasons.

What exactly does Xander see? That Buffy loves Riley? She really doesn't.
That Dawn is not special enough? Dawn's issue in Potential is that Buffy is focusing on the Potentials, Dawn was the key, how much more special can you get? If Xander can "see" things, why didn't he notice the hell Buffy was going through in season six? That his best friend was consistently raping a woman she claimed to love?

*Calms down*

And yet, I still hate Xander more for the fact, that his terrible deeds, because they are hidden under the cloak of humanness and human mistakes, are not ever called into question, he's never punished or held responsible...even Anya refuses to curse him in the end..

Oh Lord, if I hadn't written him completely off during Dead Man's Party, Hell's Bells would have made me hate him.

As it was, it was just one more piece of confirmation that Xander sucks.

And I agree, Xander didn't see jack, but the show treated things as though he did. Except they weren't writing the same show I watched.
