30 Day Fanfic Writing Meme Days 18 and 19

snapping on Friday
Damn, this meme is harder than I thought to keep up with.

18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

In terms of location, I seem to get the most bunnies when I’m either taking a shower or washing dishes by hand. There’s something about the repetition of motion that puts me in the frame of mind I apparently need to make little connections or to get hit by a line of dialogue or an image. But in general, I usually get my bunnies from the same places everyone else does – a line from a song, or the whole song itself (every time I listen to “Kissing You” by Des’ree, I feel an intense urge to write something post YW), prompts during ficathons or from my flist, and from talking to damnskippytoo.

To be honest, I don’t have a lot of plot bunnies, I’m usually trying to convey a feeling or mood I’m in, how I see my ship. How I interpret scenes or whatnot. If I ever got an actual plot bunny, I’d probably pass out from the shock. LOL

19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

In a perfect world, I’d sit down right away and start writing, but in reality I’ve ever only done that probably a handful of times. Usually I stew on the idea for a while, mull it over while I’m trying to get through my day to where I could sit down. I think it helps to put the idea on a low heat and let it simmer. It unfurls things and takes root in my head.

I don’t know if this is true for a lot of other people, but writing the ideas down or making outlines don’t really work for me. Maybe it’s a lack of discipline on my part but making notes and stuff seems to ‘exorcise’ the creativity out of the idea, and I lose my enthusiasm for writing it. Which is frustrating because I think I've forgotten a lot of interesting ideas by not writing them down. But writing them down makes me file them away and I never get them written.

So I guess I'm kind of screwed, huh?

Okay that is kind of freaky because I get most of my ideas doing dishes or in the shower too. Also right before I go to bed. Sometimes I jump up after laying down, turn on the computer, and just type it all out.

I wonder how common that is, inspiration during repetitive tasks. I assume probably a lot?

It's probably common. I wouldn't get an idea when I'm at Supercuts getting my hair washed because I'd be too relaxed. Ditto for getting into bed. But washing dishes and and showering? Brings out my Zen-mode and things just *flash*.

I discovered that it's never a good idea thinking about fic and writing when I'm driving. I have seriously driven *miles* and not realized it because I was too busy thinking about fandom.
