25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
I used to think I needed music to write a lot more than I really did. But I found I spent more time trying to find the perfect series of songs than I did writing. So, yes, I do listen to music while I write, but I’m just as likely to be listening to the television too. I don’t need music, I discovered, because if I have a fic that’s really just falling off the edge of my fingers onto the keyboard like slow roasted meat off a rib bone, then I won’t hear anything, not the TV, not the music, or even my phone. I’m just hearing the fic in my head and trying to get it committed to Word Doc.
I’ve never listened to a playlist to try and get into a mood. It’s more like I’ll put a song on and then I get the urge to write a specific something. This happens a lot with certain songs and post-YW AtS, LOL.
The only fic I think I ever needed a specific piece of music for is Persephone. Because when I’m writing that series, I am trying very hard to reach a dark part of myself and I need a good conductor to get there. Sober, Judith and Noose by Tool and two songs that were featured on BtVS have done it for me every time. When I’m on a roll and the words are coming, I set only one song on repeat. Usually Noose.
Really, Tool is an awesome band to listen to when you’re writing because their music makes you reach something more than words.
26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
To date, corsetry.
Which, I never even knew was a thing thing until I looked it up.
27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
I generally love to write in the living room, on the couch, in the middle of the night or afternoon, and I use my computer. If I tried to write by hand, it wouldn’t turn out at all. I’d forget what I wanted to say with the effort to keep pen to paper.
